Autonomy and wording
Why people push back on advice, and the words that make it easier to hear.
When advice feels like pressure, people push back to protect their freedom, a reaction psychologists call reactance. Motivation that comes from a person's own reasons goes further than pressure from outside.
Wording matters: in an experiment, simply reminding people the choice was theirs reduced pushback against health messages, and the effect lasted a week.
