When advice feels like pressure, people push back to protect their freedom, a reaction psychologists call reactance. Motivation that comes from a person's own reasons goes further than pressure from outside.

Wording matters: in an experiment, simply reminding people the choice was theirs reduced pushback against health messages, and the effect lasted a week.

## Questions in this topic

- [Why do I push back when an app tells me what to do?](https://tre-up.com/research/why-do-i-push-back-when-an-app-tells-me-what-to-do): Because being pushed feels like losing a freedom, and people act to win it back; psychologists call this reactance. In an experiment with 394 people (Richards et al., 2022), simply reminding them the choice was theirs reduced the pushback against health messages, and the effect was still there a week later. - **Reducing Psychological Reactance to Health Promotion Messages: Comparing Preemptive and Postscript Mitigation Strategies**. Richards AS, Bessarabova E, Banas JA, Bernard DR (2022). Health Communication 37(3):366–374. https://doi.org/10.1080/10410236.2020.1839203
  - Institutions: Affiliation not yet confirmed
  - Design: Experiment with a one-week follow-up; sample: 394 participants
  - What it found: Health messages that felt more controlling made people push back. Reminding them that the choice was theirs, either before the message or in a short note after it, reduced that pushback equally, and the effect was still there a week later.
  - Where the evidence stops: Message wording about exercise and nutrition. It does not test notification frequency or apps.

- **A Theory of Psychological Reactance**. Brehm JW (1966). Academic Press (book). https://ci.nii.ac.jp/ncid/BA02256417?l=en
  - Institutions: Affiliation not yet confirmed
  - Design: Theory (book)
  - What it found: When people feel a freedom is threatened, they become motivated to restore it, often by doing the opposite of what they were pushed to do. This is 'psychological reactance'.
  - Where the evidence stops: A classic theory; the book itself is a framework, not a test. Used here only as background.

  - Institutions: University of Rochester (United States)
  - Design: Theory paper
  - What it found: Self-determination theory: people need to feel competent, autonomous and connected. When those needs are met, motivation is more self-driven and well-being is higher; how and why a goal is pursued matters, not only which goal.
  - Where the evidence stops: A broad theory with a large body of later evidence; this paper is the framework, not a single test.
